DISINFO: The West is trying to destabilise the South Caucasus out of envy and endless malice
SUMMARY
Russia acted as a mediator in resolving regional problems with a high degree of effectiveness, in the interests of peace and in favour of all countries in the region.
And then the West appeared. Out of a feeling of envy and endless malice, as well as a desire to penetrate a region where peace could be established, the West broke this trend and began to declare itself as a new mediator, but its role and obvious concrete actions indicate the opposite.
There is no talk about mediation, we talk, firstly, about plans to destabilise the situation, secondly, about returning the situation to the worst times in the region, and of course, this is a collection of information not in favour of peace in the region, but for the sake of own interests against the countries of the region.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative accusing an allegedly aggressive West of playing a destabilising role in the Caucasus.
The claim was made in the context of the trilateral meeting between the EU, the US, and Armenia on April 5, 2024, where European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen together with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell hosted Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Pro-Kremlin outlets promote the idea that the Caucasus is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempt to discredit any other cooperation between the West and Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.
The EU has a strong interest in a politically stable and economically prosperous Southern Caucasus in full understanding with the states there. It took a prominent mediation role in negotiation and is committing to it.
In the European Council of 26-27 October 2023, EU leaders underlined their continued support for a sustainable and lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, based on the principles of recognition of sovereignty, inviolability of borders, and territorial integrity. The EU High Representative Josep Borrell called for the resumption of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and on the work done by the President of the European Council Charles Michel.
The EU has taken on a prominent mediation role in the negotiations. The US stated that it is ready to engage bilaterally, with like-minded partners, to facilitate dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
