DISINFO: The West wants to deploy its contingent in Transcaucasia under the auspices of NATO
SUMMARY
The Americans and Europeans are not interested in establishing stability in the Caucasus. By persuading Yerevan to delay negotiations with Baku, the West is trying to lead the process of the Azerbaijani-Armenian settlement and achieve the deployment of its own "peacekeeping" contingent in the region - de jure under the auspices of the UN, and de facto - NATO.
The possible nature of such peacekeeping is already indicated by the fact that the so-called "independent civilian EU observation mission" deployed on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan is conducting intelligence activities in the interests of a specific NATO country against Russia and its partners.
RESPONSE
This unfounded and recurring claim by pro-Kremlin media accuses an ever-aggressive West and NATO of having a destabilising role in the Caucasus. This piece also recalls another often-used pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative attempting to discredit the EU mission to Armenia, accusing it of espionage.
The allegations that the West is pushing Armenia to delay the peace talks with Azerbaijan and plans to deploy a NATO contingent in the South Caucasus are baseless. 'These comments are full of nonsense and the usual lies and manipulations typical for the Russian regime that tries to cover its repeated failures to deliver on its promises and commitments to Armenia,' EEAS spokesperson Peter Stano said.
Pro-Kremlin outlets promote the idea that the Caucasus is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempt to discredit any other efforts of mediation in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This article even claims that Western/NATO countries worsen the situation and want to undermine efforts to find a peaceful agreement.
The EU has a strong interest in a politically stable and economically prosperous Southern Caucasus in full understanding with the states there. It took a prominent mediation role in negotiation and is committing to it.
In the European Council of 26-27 October 2023, EU leaders underlined their continued support for a sustainable and lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, based on the principles of recognition of sovereignty, inviolability of borders and territorial integrity.
The EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA) is a civilian mission that observes and reports on the security situation on the ground, contributes to the security of the people in conflict-affected areas in Armenia, and builds confidence on the ground.
