RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation theme attempting to depict accusations of Russian interference in the 2020 US presidential elections, in the 2016 US presidential elections, and in other political processes in Western countries as factually unfounded.
The US Treasury Department stated that Russian Intelligence Services “operate a network of websites that obscure their Russian origin to appeal to Western audiences” - including outlets such as SouthFront, NewsFront, InfoRos and the Strategic Culture Foundation - that “focus on divisive issues in the United States, denigrate U.S. political candidates, and disseminate false and misleading information”, and took part in a coordinated effort to interfere in the recent US presidential elections.
These pro-Kremlin outlets, according to US State Department researchers and independent experts, had a significant impact in increasing polarisation in the US prior to both the 2016 and the 2020 presidential elections.
Moreover, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), stated that:
“Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized, and a range of Russian government organizations conducted, influence operations aimed at denigrating President Biden’s candidacy and the Democratic Party, supporting former President Trump, undermining public confidence in the electoral process, and exacerbating sociopolitical divisions in the US.”
Media researchers tracked online disinformation activity to meddle in the presidential election, which can be traced back to the activities of the Russian Internet Research Agency.
Many media outlets reported on Kremlin efforts to influence the 2020 US presidential elections, including Time, NPR and The Washington Post.
