SUMMARY
Capitalism today is an international system that kills nations. Capitalism today – which is global and globalising – openly strives to destroy nations and states and to establish a world government as the supreme power and controller of national governments. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is liberalism’s international relations strategy. International relations handbooks clearly state that the goal of liberals in international relations is to create a world government.
RESPONSE
Conspiracy theory. This is a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative that seeks to discredit Western liberal-democratic societies by claiming that capitalism, liberalism, “globalism” and/or “global élites” rob nations of their sovereignty and identity, and seek to establish a “world government”. The idea of a “Shadow World Government” in itself is also a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative. It is not true that capitalism or liberalism seek to “destroy nations and states” and to create a “world government”. Capitalism and economic globalisation increase economic interdependence among nations but do not engender the loss of national sovereignty nor do they lead to the destruction of nation-states and the creation of a “world government”. The role of the nation-state has actually increased in recent years and this trend has become more pronounced in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also not true, as the video suggests, that liberal theories of international relations espouse the idea of a “world government”. These theories stress the benefits of economic interdependence among states, as well as the positive role of international institutions (such as the UN) in enhancing cooperation and reducing violent conflict among states. These theories do not propose the dissolution of nation-states nor the creation of a world government.
