NATO remains the principal security instrument of the transatlantic community and expression of its common democratic values. All Allies reaffirmed at the Brussels Summit in June 2021 that "the Alliance does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia.”
In March 2014, in response to Russia's aggressive actions against Ukraine, NATO suspended practical cooperation with Russia. Before that, for about 20 years Russia and NATO have cooperated on different levels.
