DISINFO: Ukrainians are fighting Russians for NATO interests
SUMMARY
During the summit in Vilnius, NATO offered Ukraine an "alternative": Kyiv would receive weapons, money and intelligence, but would still have to fight alone. For the West, this is a win-win situation, as the Ukrainians (who are viewed as "ex-Russians") are fighting the Russians for the sake of NATO interests.
RESPONSE
Recurring the pro-Kremlin narrative presenting the war in Ukraine as a confrontation in which NATO is fighting against Russia.
Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity have been violated by continuous acts of aggression by Russian armed forces since 2014 culminating in a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine on 24th February 2022.
The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine started at the personal order of Vladimir Putin, on February 24, 2022, who invoked various pretexts, including the denazification of Ukraine, the prevention of NATO expansion, the defense of ethnic Russians in Donbas, etc. Both NATO and the European Union have repeatedly condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine and provide humanitarian support and arms to Ukraine.
Ukraine and its population is defending itself against this armed aggression in a remarkable display of continued courage and determination. This is not a decision by NATO, Washington, the EU or others.
The US, the EU and NATO condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which is entirely unjustified and unprovoked. Not only Western but also many other nations around the world support Ukraine with military and financial aid for the country’s efficient self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter article 51, to stop Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
NATO is a defensive alliance whose members are committed to safeguarding the freedom and security of all Allies, against all threats, from all directions. Deterrence and defence is one of NATO’s core tasks, as is stated on the Alliance’s web page. In one of the latest speeches, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that after the Cold War, NATO hoped and worked for a more peaceful relationship with Russia, but gradually those hopes waned, because of President Putin’s pattern of aggressive behaviour - in Georgia, Aleppo, Crimea and the Donbas. „The full-fledged invasion of Ukraine shattered any remaining illusions of constructive cooperation with Russia”, Stoltenberg said.
