DISINFO: US arms deliveries to Ukraine delay peaceful settlement
SUMMARY
US deliveries of long-range rocket systems and Mi-17 helicopters to Ukraine only delays the prospect of a prompt peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets claiming that Western arms deliveries to Ukraine only aggravate the situation. This claim was made in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
In reality, Western nations provide Ukraine with both defensive and offensive weapons to help it repel the Russian invasion and liberate all of its internationally recognised territories from occupation. Ukraine does not intend to invade Russia or seize part of its territory after liberation. It is Russia’s unwillingness to stop fighting and start talks on Ukrainian conditions that delays peace. Contrary to Russia’s claims that its troops strike only military infrastructure, they have completely ruined the city of Mariupol and some other residential areas, causing thousands of civilian casualties. If Russia fails to lift its blockade of Ukrainian seaports, millions of people around the world may suffer from widespread famine because Ukraine cannot export its agricultural produce by sea.
Along with arming Ukraine, the West continues to pressurise Russia with sanctions. The EU adopted a sixth package of economic and individual sanctions on 3 June 2022. It includes restrictions on exports, prohibition of consulting services, de-SWIFTing of additional banks, suspension of the broadcasting activities of several Russian state-owned media outlets, as well as individual sanctions.
