AstraZeneca's vaccine is still missing from the US vaccine arsenal, but that doesn’t mean that Washington is waging a political war against it nor against other vaccines coming from different countries.
The difference comes down to how the US Food and Drug Administration independently scrutinises vaccines, doing their own scientific review of a company's safety and efficacy data, before any new shot is allowed to be put on the market.
In the US, there's even an independent advisory committee, which reviews data sets from both the FDA and drug companies, before the agency makes its final decision on whether to greenlight a new shot.
Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert noted that the US government was working with different companies on six vaccine candidates, adding that AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are going to be getting their data together and showing it to the [Food and Drug Administration], which means the approval is likely "weeks away".
The vaccine hesitancy in the US is a major issue. President Joe Biden announced three major steps to improve the country’s vaccination plans, less than a week after taking office, which includes launching a national public education campaign, “that addresses vaccine hesitancy and is tailored to meet the needs of local communities.”
