The US wants to separate Europe from Russia and dominate in the region. It had always been important for the US strategy (and before that for the world strategy of the British Crown) to separate Europe and Russia from each other, so that no Eurasian alliance would emerge. This would be the end of US global hegemony. From the Anglo-American point of view, domination of the Eurasian continent is enormously important.

Both the US and the EU are trying to keep open channels of communications with Russia, despite ongoing Russian disinformation attempts.
The EU recognise Russia as a key partner on the international scene. The current legal basis for EU-Russia relations is the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) which came into force in 1997. The PCA is complemented by sectorial agreements covering a wide range of policy areas, including political dialogue, trade, science and technology, education, energy and environment, transport, and prevention of illegal activities. Some of these dialogues and consultations have been suspended following the Russian annexation of Crimea.
The EU and its member states have maintained a clear policy of reaching out to Russian society and youth, mainly through the Erasmus+ student exchange programme and other people to people contacts, in line with five guiding principles of relations with Russia.
