DISINFO: Washington is behind the attempt on the Slovak PM's life
SUMMARY
Washington needed to send a signal to all politicians in Europe. First there was Orbán. Orbán was the only one who said “I disagree with American foreign policy, especially towards Russia.” Then Fico appeared. There was already an infection with this idea that “we don’t have to agree with Washington, we will be independent Europeans.” And Washington was very scared when Fico won the elections in Slovakia. And it had to be stopped immediately. So one can guess that Washington is behind the assassination attempt on Fico. So that other politicians from France and Germany do not have the idea “we are for peace with Russia”, “we want to be friends with Russia”. Washington says "no". It says “Do you want to be friends with Russia? This is your fate like with Fico.” Orbán could be next.
RESPONSE
Conspiracy theory. Slovakian police have charged a man, described as a politically motivated “lone wolf,” with the attempted murder of Prime Minister Robert Fico on 15 May 2024.
Slovakia’s Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok said the suspect told law enforcement officers that his action was motivated by his disagreement with the government and its reforms.
Šutaj Eštok said the police were pursuing only one investigative theory – that the attack was politically motivated.
He said that the suspect told law enforcement officers that he disagreed with Fico’s policies and that he decided to act after the recent presidential election, which saw a Fico ally – Pellegrini – emerge as the winner.
“The reasons (the suspect gave) were the decision to abolish the special prosecutor’s office, the decision to stop supplying military assistance to Ukraine, the reform of public service broadcaster and the dismissal of the judicial council head,” Šutaj Eštok said.
While developing conspiracy narratives about the issue of military aid to Ukraine, pro-Kremlin media advance unsupported allegations of a U.S. plot. These outlets mock and deny any internal Slovak political events that may have influenced the situation, such as the reform of the public service broadcaster and the dismissal of the judicial council head.
Baseless claims about the EU “following Anglo-Saxon orders against Russia” are attempts to create divisions between Transatlantic allies while absolving Moscow of any responsibility for its brutal invasion of Ukraine on February 2023 and the serious humanitarian tragedy it provoked. The EU is reacting to this invasion.
