DISINFO: West-backed Ukraine rejects peace deals, shoots civilians, threatens nuclear sites
SUMMARY
It is becoming obvious why the Kyiv regime has rejected Russia’s and other countries’ peace proposals. Ukraine is striving to improve its negotiating positions with the help of its Western masters. But what kind of negotiations can be held with those who indiscriminately strike at civilians and civilian infrastructure or try to create threats to nuclear power facilities?
RESPONSE
Recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets accusing Ukraine of continuing the war “up till the last Ukrainian” instead of sitting at the negotiation table. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in general and a recent Ukrainian incursion into Russia's adjacent Kursk Region in particular.
Kyiv is ready for talks with Moscow on the basis of international law and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree in October 2022, banning talks with Putin. The decree did not say anything about a complete ban on talks with Russia, so contacts can theoretically be held with other Russia officials or a future Russian leader. Zelenskyy presented a 10-point peace plan at a EU-Ukraine summit in February 2023, which was fully supported by the EU and which provided for a complete Russian withdrawal from Ukraine till the borders of 1991 and the restoration of Kyiv’s territorial integrity. While Ukraine is ready for dialogue, based on international law and the UN Charter, Russia is putting forward unacceptable conditions such as recognition of occupied Ukrainian territories as part of Russia.
Accusations against Ukraine of shooting civilians and striking civilian infrastructure, including the Kursk NPP, are baseless. There is no evidence that Ukrainian troops have treated civilians harshly during the ongoing incursion inside Russia. Several thousands of Ukrainian troops entered Russia’s adjacent Kursk Region on 6 August 2024 and have so far occupied about 1000 square kilometres of Russian territory. Kursk acting governor Aleksei Smirnov said the Ukrainian Armed Forces control 28 settlements.
