DISINFO: Zelenskyy aims to drag more countries into war
SUMMARY
Zelenskyy does not need any negotiations or a frozen conflict. It will be the end of him. He is doing everything to continue the escalation and attacks both on the diplomatic front with supposedly peaceful summits and in order to create some military pretexts. These pretexts are either to demonstrate that Ukraine is still capable of something or to ask for some additional measures like permission to strike deep into Russian territory or to drag as many countries as possible into direct involvement in this conflict.
RESPONSE
Recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets claiming that Ukraine does not want peace and is set on fighting “to last Ukrainian”. This claim was made in the context of a visit to Kyiv by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ukraine is ready for dialogue with Russia on a just end to the war, based on international law and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree in October 2022, banning talks with Putin. The decree did not say anything about a complete ban on talks with Russia, so contacts can theoretically be held with other Russia officials or a future Russian leader. In 2023, Zelenskyy put forth a 10-point peace formula, which was completely supported by the EU. The plan includes, among other things, cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of Russian troops, and restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Moscow is also frequently coming up with so-called peace proposals, but these contain unacceptable conditions such as recognition of occupied Ukrainian territories as part of Russia. Kyiv’s partners support Ukraine’s position as a sovereign nation. During visit to Kyiv, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said that New Delhi respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Ukraine organises peace summits to draw international attention to Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression. The latest of these conferences was held in June 2024 in Switzerland. Kyiv and its partners, who sent their delegations there, are all in favour of a peaceful solution to the war on the basis the United Nations Charter and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty over all of its internationally recognised territory. The fact that a broad coalition of more than 50 countries provides Ukraine with military and financial support does not mean that these nations are involved in hostilities.
Ukraine launched an incursion into Russia’s adjacent Kursk region on 6 August 2023. As of 27 August 2024, Ukraine seized 1,294 square kilometres of Russian territory and took control of 100 settlements. Zelenskyy said during a press conference that the operation in the Kursk Region is one of the points of Ukraine's plan for victory in the war.
