DISINFO: Zelenskyy and his cronies want the war to go on because they profit from it
SUMMARY
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his inner circle are actually interested in the continuation of the conflict because it is the main source of investment in them. They are selling the West their service by conducting military operations against Russia. There is no need for talks if it turns out that they continue to be financed and to receive investment. In this regard, the attack on Russia’s Kursk Region can be viewed as an attempt to sell this service at a higher price, as if saying: “You see, we are still efficient, pay us more, you have helped us, here is the result. So we can even raise the price!”
RESPONSE
This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative claiming that Ukraine does not want the war to end. This claim was made in the context the incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces started on 6 August 2024, and in the broader context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Kyiv has been consistently advocating a just end to the war on the basis of international law and the United Nations Charter. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented a 10-point peace plan at a EU-Ukraine summit in February 2023, which received full support from the European Union. Among other points, this plan calls for a complete Russian withdrawal from Ukraine and the restoration of its territorial integrity within the internationally recognised borders of 1991.
Unlike Kyiv, Moscow, which launched its unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine on 24 February 2022, is urging the Ukrainians to surrender with the consideration of what it calls the “new realities on the ground”. Russia does not want to withdraw from occupied territories and demands that Ukraine officially recognises these as part of the Russian Federation. Ukraine does not agree to such conditions because they violate international law. Ukraine is ready for talks on the basis of respect for its sovereignty over its internationally recognised territory. A broad coalition of more than 50 nations, including some NATO member states, provide Ukraine with military and technical support to help it repel Russia’s aggression.
The incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region is carried out in self-defence, in accordance with the UN Charter article 51.
