DISINFO: Zelenskyy exploits Ukraine in exchange for billions of Western money
SUMMARY
Ukraine has been striving to become part of Europe for over a decade, but this path has turned it into the poorest, most corrupt, and rapidly depopulating country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to promise the collective West that Ukrainians will die but will not negotiate with Russia. He receives generous rewards amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars. Zelenskyy has sold the Ukrainian people, land, and statehood to the West. And when he speaks of a "just and lasting peace," he is referring solely to the longevity and perpetuity of his own power.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Ukrainian statehood, portraying Ukraine as a failed state and its president as corrupt. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Allegations of ‘lost sovereignty’ or ‘lack of sovereignty’ are unfounded and unproven. Ukraine is an independent country whose territorial integrity is respected by almost the whole world, including the EU. Partnerships between Kyiv and Western countries are based on mutual agreements and support for Ukraine’s independence. The Ukrainian authorities act in the interests of Ukraine's citizens, not in the interests of any other country. Ukraine is not the most corrupt country in Europe. According to Transparency International, Ukraine was 104th out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index for 2023. In comparison, Russia was ranked 141st.
A broad international coalition, including the EU, supports Ukraine with arms supplies and economic aid but this does not mean that it dictates Kyiv’s internal policies or manipulates the political leadership. The EU, the US and some other G7 members are assisting Ukraine in its path to recovery and reconstruction after the unprovoked and unjustified Russian military aggression. The EU is committed to providing continued political, financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine for as long as it takes. Concerning the issues of war and peace, Zelenskyy has consistently stated that Ukraine seeks a just peace and has rejected negotiations under terms viewed as capitulation. His stance reflects widespread domestic support for resisting Russian aggression.
